Question 39:
[Physical > Equilibria]:
Which ions are present in a
solution of ethanol in an excess of concentrated sulphuric acid?
1 CH3CH2O-
2 CH3CH2O+H2
3 HSO-4
Reference: Past Exam Paper – November 2002 Paper 1 Q39
Solution 39:
Answer: C.
In this solution the sulphuric acid is the stronger acid thus will donate
protons (H+), and the organic alcohol will accept the protons
raising a positive charge in it.
Thus 1 is incorrect since the alcohol is
gaining a negative charge but should gain a positive charge.
Hence the only
valid option is C.
